REWIND, an idea as well as a concert, will have its debut performance on Thursday June 8th, at the Angel Orensanz Center. Violinists Anne Akiko Meyers and Colin Jacobsen will be featured along with the chamber orchestra, The Knights, led by REWIND Artistic Director Paul Haas.
REWIND takes the listener through 500 years of music, with works by nine composers including: Schnittke, Schöenberg, Mozart, and Purcell. In between the these works there will be REWIND commissioned works by Judd Greenstein, Joshua Penman, and digital sampling artist Joel Morales. The REWIND works, whether formally composed, sampled or improvisatory will re-contextualize the concert pieces and act as a bridge between works.
Paul Haas states in an interview we conducted recently, REWIND is what might be called a feature length concert, lasting about 90 uninterrupted minutes. It reflects an attempt to situate a listener in a “ multi-layered soundspace” where works move in and out of a larger sonic ambience. REWIND is an attempt to create a fluid context for new sounds and more familiar works.
The context of the concert should not take attention away from the impressive talent assembled to perform the works. Violinists Anne Akiko Meyers and Colin Jacobsen have major careers as soloists and have worked with great orchestras in the US and Europe, and REWIND creator and conductor, Paul Haas has guest conducted throughout the country and has received laudatory New York Times reviews for his work with the New York Youth Symphony.
